Premier League Week 2 Predictions

The first week of action has come and gone for the premier league and needless to say this season will be action packed every week. Nearly every game there was a new storyline from Huddersfield Town’s monumental upset over Crystal Palace to Burnley’s underdog performance against Chelsea. As we get set for the second week of play, Just The PHacts are going to highlight this week’s big fixtures and give you a winner.

Manchester United @ Swansea City 7:30 AM ET

The Red Devils are flying high going into this weeks match after beating West Ham 4-0 in their last fixture. The entire Man U squad played well from Nemanja Matic and Paul Pogba dominating play in the midfield to Eric Bailly and Phil Jones controlling the West Ham forwards on defense. Being away, Swansea presents a bigger challenge but expect young Marcus Rashford and Henrikh Mkhitaryan to find the back of the net in route to a United victory.

Predicted Final: 2-1 Manchester United

Crystal Palace @Liverpool 10:00 AM ET

Both teams are looking to get different results than last week. Liverpool showed signs of greatness but ultimately, a lack of defending led to a tie against a scrappy Watford team. They will need to keep their shape in the back if they want to get three points this week. As for the eagles, Crystal Palace needs to improve every aspect of play. Their midfield and defense were constantly turning over the ball giving the forwards little to no chances to score. Liverpool will win in front of their home crowd handing CP their second consecutive defeat.

Predicted Final: 1-0 Liverpool

Arsenal @ Stoke City 12:30 PM ET

The gunners are coming off a big win at home against the foxes of Leicester City. They’ll need to sharpen up in the back if they want to win this week against a hungry Stoke team. With Stoke hosting Arsenal this week, look for Xherdan Shaqiri to grab a goal and an assist as Stoke blows past the visiting gunners.

Predicted Final: 2-0 Stoke City

Chelsea @ Tottenham 11:00 AM ET Sunday

Chelsea will be looking to bounce back after getting embarrassed at home against a rather mediocre Burnley side. Without Cahill, both David Luiz and Antonio Rudiger will need to step up for Chelsea in the back. Tottenham need to get Harry Kane on the score sheet after missing a world class chance last week. Chelsea will find a way to return to championship form beating Tottenham on the road.

Predicted Final 3-1 Chelsea

Everton @ Manchester City 3:00 PM Monday

Both teams looking to make it a second week in a row with three points. Everton had a big win over visiting Stoke as Rooney proved age is but a number and Man City dominated Brighton leading to a 2-0 victory. Both Jesus and Aguero will need to be on the same page if City wants to get the result they are looking for. Ultimately Pep Guardiola’s side will be too much for Everton, especially at home.

Predicted Final: 2-0 Manchester City

Eagles Trade for Ronald Darby Has Them in a Better Place

Howie Roseman can only go so long before making another shocking move. The Eagles general manager has already had a busy offseason, bringing in new talent with lofty one year contracts and shocking blockbuster trades. But on Saturday afternoon, Roseman added more chaos to the post-Chip Kelly rebuild by sending wide receiver Jordan Matthews and a 2018 third-round pick to the Buffalo Bills for cornerback Ronald Darby.

Darby, a former second round draft choice, is entering his third NFL season. In his first two years with Buffalo, he racked up 121 total tackles and two interceptions. Darby may not be a ball-hawk, but his speed and coverage ability will make him the number one corner on a team bereft of talent on the outside. If new teammate Jalen Mills continues to build off of his rookie year success, the Eagles could have an exceptional cornerback pair this season.

However, the Eagles paid a high price to acquire Darby. Jordan Matthews was the team’s top wide receiver last year, and he racked up 225 catches in his first three seasons, a team record. Not to mention the third-round pick, which now leaves the Eagles without a second-round and third-round pick for the 2018 NFL Draft. Even so, Matthews is certainly the bigger loss. Quarterback Carson Wentz, one of Matthews’ best friends, told Philly.com that the trade was “tough [to deal with].”

Had this trade been done last season, the Eagles offense would be left with no quality wide receivers. But Roseman’s offseason moves added more offensive weapons, giving him the ability to shop Matthews in search of a top corner. While Wentz may have lost a friend, he’ll still have plenty of options on offense this season. Former Pro-Bowl wide receiver Alshon Jeffery signed a one year deal with the team this year, and he should be Wentz’s top target if he can avoid the injuries that have stalled his career. The Eagles have also brought in veteran Torrey Smith and rookie Mack Hollins to address the receiver position. As for tight end, Zach Ertz and Trey Burton have been great in training camp so far. If Ertz can finally live up to expectations, the Eagles passing game should be smooth in 2017.

The Eagles front office put themselves in a position to trade assets this season, and they cashed in to get Ronald Darby. Their moves this year cushioned their losses while filling in their biggest hole.

Carson Wentz, Our Savior

The next great sports superstar isn’t in Boston, he isn’t in LA, he isn’t in NY (@AaronJudge), he is in Philadelphia. Carson Wentz is the Eagles’ franchise QB and every game gets me more excited for the moment we will lift the Lombardi Trophy. This past Thursday the Eagles took on the Green Bay Packers in their preseason opener in Green Bay. The game itself was rather boring besides the Eagles opening drive where we got a taste of sophomore Carson Wentz and the new Eagles offense and man was it delicious. Talk about connecting on all cylinders, the birds will undoubtedly be flying high this season. The Wentz to Mack Hollins touchdown pass made me jump out of my seat and scream, “WE ARE GOING TO THE SUPERBOWL,” it is the Eagles time.

With Ezekiel Elliott out for the Cowboys, the NFC East just got a whole lot easier. Sure we still have a very menacing Giants team to worry about and an underrated Redskins but c’mon, the Redskins always choke and Eli is older and throws worse than my 82 year old grandmother, god bless her heart. I don’t care who you put on WR, you need a QB to get it to them and Eli Manning is about to hang ’em up. Sorry Eli, there isn’t a story book ending for you like there was for Peyton. My advice, get out of the game before Ronald Darby picks you off twice and Fletcher Cox dances all over your offensive line on his way to three sacks.

Eagles fans, get excited because if this year isn’t the year, it is coming. I can smell it and my nose doesn’t let me down baby. I could smell a Phillies title run in ’08 and that same fragrance is coming off this Eagles team.

Romelu Lukaku, Manchester United’s Missing Link

Today, Manchester United dominated West Ham up and down the pitch leading to a 4-0 win. Two of those goals came from their newly acquired forward, Romelu Lukaku. The Belgian striker was previously seen terrorizing defenses for Everton but Man Utd swooped in and signed Lukaku for 90 million euros this summer.

The game went scoreless for the first 30 minutes till young English forward Marcus Rashford made a good run through the middle of the field leading to a superb pass to a streaking Lukaku who one-timed it off the left post and in to beat West Ham keeper Joe Hart. The half ended 1-0 and as the game progressed, West Ham started to lose their shape leading to Lukaku’s second goal, a set-piece from just outside the box. Henrikh Mkhitaryan whipped in a ball and Lukaku demonstrated his ariel presence, soaring over his defender and heading the ball into the back of the net.

Lukaku’s brace was more than enough for Man Utd. as they continued to dominate on all cylinders. His presence up top might be what Manchester United was missing up top last season. Zlatan gave them good strength and the occasional long shot but Lukaku brings speed, skill, and strength like no other forward in the Premier League. It has only been the first weekend of games but from the looks of it, Manchester United are poised to make a run at the league title and potentially a strong push in this season’s Champions League.

Premier League Projections 2017/18

In just three days time, Arsenal will host Leicester City in the 2017/18 season opening fixture. Finally an eventful offseason is starting to come to an end and teams can start to focus on the season. With new transfer news coming just about every day, the premier league welcomed some of the world’s greatest players such as Alexandre Lacazette, Mohamed Salah, and Alvaro Morata. The 2017/18 season is expected to be one of the most competitive in league history with such talented rosters across the entire league. Here are the top five teams in the premier league going into the season.

#5 Arsenal

The Gunners are coming into the season extremely pleased after retaining both Mesut Ozil and Alexis Sanchez. Arsenal is already off to a hot start after winning the community shield in pens against last year’s premier league winners, Chelsea. Arsenal added the electric scorer, Alexandre Lacazette from OL-Lyon. The combination of Lacazette’s scoring ability, Ozil’s control of the midfield, and Sanchez’s explosive wing play, will see the Gunner’s finish with a top five position and spot in Europa League competition.

Key Player: Alexis Sanchez

#4 Liverpool

For a long time coming Liverpool has been given high expectations which has only been met with disappointment and frustration. Liverpool added the Egyptian speedster Mohamed Salah and despite the expected departure of Philipe Coutinho, they are still predicted to finish with a champions league position. With such a dominant midfield consisting of Wijnaldum, Lallana, Can, and Henderson, Liverpool will look to control the pace of play and ultimately get behind defenses with Sadio Mane, Mohamed Salah, and Roberto Firmino.

Key Player: Sadio Mane

#3 Tottenham

Led by their golden boot winning forward Harry Kane, the Spurs will need his success in order to compete this season. Their midfield is coming into the season more experienced and continue to make plays led by Dele Alli and Christian Eriksen. Tottenham will need strong defense from their wings after losing Kyle Walker to Manchester City and Kieran Trippier struggling in preseason play. Their ability to score using Kane and the midfield will be vital to the teams future success.

Key Player: Harry Kane

#2 Manchester United

The Red Devils are arguably the most talented team in the entire league. Their offseason acquisition of Romelu Lukaku from Everton has already started to show that he has been worth the heavy price Manchester paid. Along with Lukaku, United also recently acquired Chelsea defensive midfielder Nemanja Matic. The two new signings are both immediate impact players that will leave a mark on the season. The combination of outside speed from Anthony Martial and Henrikh Mkhitaryan along with strong defending from Chris Smalling and Eric Bailly will take the Red Devils back to a spot they’re used to being.

Key Player: Romelu Lukaku

#1 Manchester City

Manchester City has been making the most moves of any premier league team this offseason acquiring multiple superstar caliber players, Bernardo Silva, Kyle Walker, Danilo, and goalkeeper Ederson. City was on the edge of putting everything together last season and now one year later, they will take the league by storm and reach premier league glory. Up top the duo of Gabriel Jesus and Sergio Aguero will continue to work better along side one another and trouble opposing defenders.

Key Player: Gabriel Jesus

College Football Playoff 2017 Predictions

With the college football season right around the corner, it is only right to predict how the season will conclude by picking the CFP final four.

1.) Florida State

Florida State is one of college football’s perenial programs that have a huge recruiting stream available to them in south Florida. Their talent rich roster should propel them to the number one playoff seed. They have an immovable defense and a solid quarterback in DeAndre Francois that can easily dissect opposing defenses.  Florida State will upset Alabama the first game of the season and remain undefeated for the rest of the year.

2.) Ohio State

The Buckeyes bring in the nations number one recruiting class along with plenty of returning starters for the 2017 season. The favorable combination of an easier schedule than last year and great quarterback play by senior J.T. Barrett should have the Buckeyes finishing at the number two spot.
3.) USC

Sam Darnold is undoubtedly the best quarterback in college football and the likely heisman trophy winner. As a result, his impeccable play should bring success for the USC Trojans. The Trojans have a perfect balance of out of conference and in conference difficulty which should build an impressive resume to show the voters. Although they lost some key starters on the offensive line, the depth of talent at the skill postions will put the Trojans in the playoff
4.) Alabama

Because of Alabama’s eventual early season loss to Florida State, Their position in the playoff will dip a little. But, don’t let that fool you; Nick Saban is still at the peaks of his powers and young offensive weapons like Bo Scarborough and Jalen Hurts should bring success. However, Alabama has lost key players in the offensive and defensive trenches which may slightly diminish their usual identity of hard-nosed defensive football for this season, but don’t count the tide out.

Just missed out: Penn State, Oklahoma, Washington

Top 6 Players to Watch in 2017 College Football Season

26 days remain till complete mayhem, also known as, the inaugural start of the 2017 college football season. Some of the best teams will be on display including huge games between the likes of #16 Florida vs. #9 Michigan, #20 West Virginia vs. #22 Virginia Tech, and most notably, the monumental matchup between #1 Alabama and #3 Florida State. Without question this season will be the most action-packed since the creation of the college football playoff, any team in the top ten could beat one another on any given day which makes for great competitiveness and down right good football. Here are the 6 players in college football that you’ll want to know when they’re playing on TV.

6.) Jake Browning QB Washington

Browning led the Huskies to an impressive college football appearance last season and emerged out of a very fierce PAC-12. They will look to do the same, ranked the 2nd highest of the PAC-12 teams at #7. They will have a tough time coming up against the Trojans of USC who are the only team ranked ahead of them at #4. Browning proved last year he has the ability to take over games and make big plays against good defenses but he will need to step up another level if he wants to take the Huskies back to the college football playoff.

5.) Bo Scarbrough RB Alabama

Does Scarbrough remind you of anyone? Oh yeah, the 2015 Heisman Trophy winner, Derrick Henry, from the same school as Bo. The current Alabama back has the same rare ability to shed tackles in the open field and bust out the occasional burst of speed to blow by a pursuing linebacker. Alabama comes in as the unanimous #1 seed in all of college football but the SEC always has some tricks up their sleeves with other notable teams such as #12 ranked LSU and #13 ranked Auburn. Bo needs to become a better lateral runner as last year he showed his ability to dominate the inside runs but soon, defenses will scout him and he will have a tough time making plays if he can’t adjust.

4.) Baker Mayfield QB Oklahoma

For a while now, Sooner fans have been saying this is the year Mayfield will win the Heisman. 2017 could be his year as Mayfield enters his senior year looking to take Oklahoma to their first college playoff. Oklahoma comes into the season ranked #8 and despite losing stud running back Joe Mixon, the Sooners are still poised to make a run at a Big 12 championship and beyond. His 2016 stats reflect his ability to both run and pass the ball effectively, it will now be a matter of whether or not Mayfield has that IT factor late in games to carry his team across the finish line victorious.

3.) Lamar Jackson QB Louisville

Last year’s Heisman Trophy winner is clearly an exciting player to watch. His one of a kind ability to run the ball better than most running backs brings a unique dual threat to Louisville’s dying offense. The Cardinals come into the season ranked #17, obviously not a place they want to be in, especially with such a dominate quarterback under center. Jackson’s passing ability has always been a question mark and this season is a big test for the rising junior.

2.) Saquon Barkley RB Penn State

Barkley showed the world his unparalleled ability to run the ball in last year’s Rose Bowl game against a good USC defense. Coming back to the 2017 season ready to make a run at the Heisman Trophy and a college football berth. Barkley will need to use QB Trace McSorley to his advantage. McSorley struggled from time to time last season with the occasional duck of a pass but coming back looking a lot sharper the two will need to use each other in order to keep defenses guessing on every snap.

1.) Sam Darnold QB USC

Darnold is without question the number one player in college football right now. He mirrored the same passing ability as great college football QB’s, Matt Leinart and AJ McCarron. His ability to stand in the pocket and extend plays is unmatched by any other quarterback in college football. Doubts remain as to whether or not Darnold can maintain his impeccable form or whether he will be a one hit wonder. The Trojans come in at the #4 seed looking to punch their first college football playoff ticket.

Neymar Transfers to PSG

One of the biggest transfer rumors in football history has been confirmed today. The 25 year old Brazilian has agreed to a 450€ million over 5 years. The news came as a shock to the entire Barcelona community given how beloved Neymar has been. PSG has bought out Neymar’s clause for an estimated 222€ million. Many analyst in the football world are questioning Neymar’s motives given his celebrity status at the Spanish club. Ulterior intentions suggest that Neymar intends to step into a bigger role with PSG as their main superstar player while at Barcelona he spilt the spotlight with Lionel Messi and Luis Suarez.

PSG has been searching for the missing link to make a strong push for the champions league trophy and with the addition of Neymar, they make a strong candidate for the upcoming season. Striker Edison Cavani and winger Angel Di Maria will both need to continue their world class play despite growing older as time moves forward. There is also an outside chance that Neymar is joined by Liverpool attacking midfielder, Philipe Coutinho. Coutinho has demonstrated some of the best midfield skills in all of football. He will indefinitely exit Liverpool and either make a new home in Paris or the far more likely destination, Barcelona. Barcelona will certainly miss Neymar and will be in a hurry to fill the gap at his position with only a month remaining in the current transfer window.
